Royce Simmons, affectionately known as “Roycey,” has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his significant contributions to rugby league as both a player and coach.

Simmons’ rugby league career is distinguished by his tenure with the Penrith Panthers, where he played 237 first-grade games between 1980 and 1991. He captained the team from 1983 to 1990 and led them to their inaugural premiership in 1991. Following his playing career, Simmons transitioned into coaching, serving as the Panthers’ head coach from 1994 to 2001 and later coaching teams in the United Kingdom.
Beyond his on-field achievements, Simmons founded the Royce Simmons Foundation in 2022, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease research. His commitment to the community and the sport has left an indelible mark, making this recognition well-deserved.
The Penrith Panthers celebrated Simmons’ honor, stating, “Congratulations to Roycey on being awarded the Order of Australia Medal.”
The broader rugby league community also acknowledged Simmons’ contributions, with the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) extending their congratulations to all Australia Day Honours recipients, including Simmons. ([New South Wales Rugby League](https://www.nswrl.com.
