Georgia has had the best head coach in program history for the last eight years. As much as I admire Vince Dooley for his national

championship and remarkable tenure in Athens, Kirby’s first eight seasons stand as the best run in Georgia history.

Georgia now has the best head coach in the nation following the retirement of Nick Saban. With a strong roster, Georgia is the clear

favorite to win a third straight national championship.

But being a Georgia fan hasn’t always been this wonderful. The Dawgs have experienced some difficult times, and in college football,

almost all of those difficult times begin with the choice of the incorrect head coach. It seems unlikely that Georgia will be riding the

coaching carousel very soon.

During his five years in Athens, Jim Donnan was anything but a bust; he made it to four bowl games and finished a perfect 4-0,

winning the Oahu Classic, Peach Bowl, and Outback Bowl twice. Even though he managed a 10-win campaign in 1997 and won SEC

Coach of the Year, Donnan was never able to defeat Georgia’s fiercest opponents.

Georgia won their first two games versus Georgia Tech during his five-year tenure, but from 1998 to 2000, the team lost three straight.

Donnan went 0-5 against Tennessee, 2-3 against Auburn, and his lone victory over Florida occurred in 1997.

Donnan, who was hired by Athens after five years and one Division I-AA national championship at Marshall, is a branch off of the
