Former Brisbane Broncos star Corey Oates has transitioned from professional rugby league to a new career in radio broadcasting. After announcing his retirement from the NRL earlier this year, Oates joined KIIS 97.3FM’s breakfast show, “Robin, Kip, and Corey,” marking a significant shift from the sports field to the airwaves.
Oates had long considered a career in radio post-football, but an unexpected encounter with co-host Kip Wightman in Las Vegas expedited this move. Reflecting on his new role, Oates expressed excitement about the challenges it presents, stating that while he occasionally misses the thrill of playing at Suncorp Stadium, he is enthusiastic about his future in radio. He also humorously noted that his wife, Tegan, is primarily concerned about avoiding public embarrassment due to his on-air comments.
In his rugby league career, Oates played 216 NRL games and represented Queensland in nine State of Origin matches. Despite his retirement from professional play, he remains a supporter of the Brisbane Broncos and is optimistic about their prospects in the upcoming 2025 season under new coach Michael Maguire and with the addition of Benny Hunt.
