Beauden Barrett, an All Blacks fullback, has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and the Blues until the end of
2027, pledging to play in New Zealand for the next four years.
Barrett is presently playing for Toyota Verblitz in Japan Rugby League One, but when he returns to New Zealand in
2024 and rejoins Super Rugby Pacific in 2025, he will be eligible for selection for the All Blacks.According to Barrett,
his choice is a reflection of his wish to stand in for New Zealand.
“I will always be grateful for the incredible honor of wearing the black jersey. I’m still incredibly excited about
playing for Coastal, Taranaki, or the All Blacks with my brothers Scott and Jordie.
Since making his All Blacks debut in 2012, Barrett (a 123 test All Black and two-time World Rugby Player of the
Year) has been a crucial component of the team’s success. During his career, which included winning the Rugby
World Cup in 2015, he scored 734 points and 43 tries.
Eight years after scoring a try in the 2015 final victory over the Wallabies, he scored the lone try in the All Blacks’
World Cup final loss to South Africa. He has placed first, third, and second in his three World Cup competitions. A
four-year contract allows him to compete in a fourth World Cup in Australia in 2027.
Scott Robertson, head coach of the All Blacks, stated: “Beauden brings an enormous amount of class.”
“Auckland is now home to my family and me, but Taranaki will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ve had fun
working with the Blues, and I think we can produce outcomes that live up to the quality on the team,” he remarked.
“I still have a strong desire to win titles with this squad, so that’s where my attention is right now. We have the same
vision for this squad, and I have met some wonderful Blues supporters.
CEO of the Blues, Andrew Hore, said the team was thrilled to welcome the standout player back in blue.
Hore said of Beauden, “He’s one of rugby’s good people and treats everyone with respect. Beauden is wonderful to
have at the Blues.”
“He is someone who is willing to share his opinions in a team setting for the greater good. He has been a major force
behind many of our social projects and community work over the last few years, including our response to the flood
and Covid.”
“Every contract extension allows us to look back on a player’s tenure with the team. By settling on this deal, Beauden
and the Blues were able to assess our past performance and reaffirm our commitment to the team’s goals.
Hore stated, “We are convinced Beauden will return with fire in his belly to take the club forward on and off the field.
We know he feels he has unfinished business here at the Blues.”
