Only Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys could guarantee the employment of the present head coach while also allowing for a possible
replacement. All of this has led to speculation that Jones would hunt big game this offseason by taking a shot at Jim Harbaugh of the
Michigan Wolverines or Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots.
On his weekly radio program with 105.3 The Fan, Jones seemed taken aback by the conversation over Mike McCarthy’s job security.
However, Jones stated a few days prior that the Cowboys will approach McCarthy game by game in the postseason. After the Cowboys
won 12 games in a regular season for three straight seasons, it is difficult to see them part ways with McCarthy.
Whether it’s a good thing or not, the Cowboys’ early playoff departure will stoke concerns about McCarthy’s future. According to
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, if the Dallas Cowboys decide to surprise everyone by signing McCarthy, Harbaugh would be a
major contender.
Is Dallas among those clubs that are considering Harbaugh? It’s hard to think differently. According to Knox, in an article published
on January 8, 2024, headlined “Ideal Head Coaching Fits for Cowboys If They Lose in NFL Playoffs, Harbaugh is about to compete for
one championship and he spent little time gaining the same opportunity the previous time he was in the NFL. Mike McCarthy should
be fired.
In his first season as the 49ers’ head coach, Harbaugh advanced to the NFC championship game, and the following year, he won the
Super Bowl. Jones should seek Harbaugh as his ideal head coach because he has demonstrated the ability to produce outcomes
quickly.
“…it’s not difficult to see Jones swooping in and going after what’s arguably the most attractive coaching prospect this year.”
Jim Harbaugh of Michigan Football Has Received a 10-Year, $125 Million Contract Offer
Should Jones pursue Harbaugh, the Cowboys owner will have to pay a higher price. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report,
Harbaugh could be able to get an average $15 million yearly pay in the NFL. This would put him in the range of Belichick’s $20 million
pay, the league insider continued.
All of this is happening at the same time that Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Michigan had extended Harbaugh’s contract
in principle. This $125 million, ten-year deal prohibits Harbaugh from speaking with NFL teams beyond 2024.
“Jim Harbaugh weighing contract offer from Michigan that includes no-NFL clause for 2024,” Rapoport wrote in a December 24
article. “Sources say Harbaugh, whose current deal runs through 2026, received an offer for a 10-year, $125-million contract extension
that would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.” There is a catch, though, and it has to do with the NFL.
According to the agreement, Harbaugh would not consider or take an NFL position for the 2024 season if he signed it, which he has
not yet done. Although the NFL rule only allowed for one season, it seems that this has been enough to cause the process to drag on.
According to insiders, Michigan has also made Harbaugh an offer for a much shorter contract at around $11 million year.
