‘Home run’ for Kalen DeBoer, Alabama defensive coordinator hiring Chance Wommack
Kane Wommack of South Alabama is anticipated to be appointed by new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer as the team’s defensive
coordinator. Wommack guided the Jaguars to an overall record of 22-16 while serving as South Alabama’s head coach for the previous
three years.
South Alabama finished 7-6 this autumn after going 10-3 and winning the Sun Belt in 2022. The year before Wommack arrived, South
Alabama’s scoring defense was ranked No. 113 in the country. Under his leadership, it got better every year and came in at No. 29 this
year.
In 2019, Wommack collaborated with DeBoer at Indiana, and upon his departure in 2020, he continued to work with the Hoosiers.
That year, the Hoosiers had the nation’s 19th-ranked scoring defense. Wommack was one of five contenders for the Broyles Award,
which is presented to the best college football assistant coach each year.
