At the Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday, the tenth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team defeated the
Arkansas squad 99-68 after jumping out to an 18-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.
By the end of the first quarter, the Razorbacks (14-6, 2-3 SEC) had cut the score to 25-16, but they would never close the gap to just
one point. LSU led by as many as 34 points and shot 48.6% from the field, including 8 of 20 from three-point range.
With the exception of rookie guard Mikaylah Williams, who scored 21 points, every starter for the Tigers scored in double figures.
Angel Reese ended with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while Hailey Van Lith contributed 20 points.
It was the worst loss Arkansas had suffered since losing to South Carolina 92-46 on January 22, 2023.
Before facing No. 1 South Carolina on Thursday, LSU (18-2, 5-1) increased its home winning streak to 29 and its conference home win streak to 17.
Under third-year coach Kim Mulkey, the Tigers are 17-1 at home in the SEC.
This season, LSU has won 11 games by at least 30 points. The Tigers led Division I with 91.3 points per game going into the contest.
Out of 47 games, the Razorbacks made 12 of them (25.5%) from beyond the arc. In the history of the program, it was the most three-
point attempts attempted.
Mulkey commented, “Arkansas is so dangerous,” on the LSU Sports Radio Network following the game. “They make a ton of threes. I
informed the squad that they would lose on layups and free throws but not on three-pointers.
In a game, they made nine threes on average. They made 12 of the 47 threes they attempted today. You will not be defeated by it. We
did a fantastic job of cutting off the layups and the amount of times they crossed the foul line.”
StatBroadcast reports that the Razorbacks were 16 of 17 from the free-throw line and made six layups.
Williams was instrumental in the Tigers’ opening eighteen points of the game, scorching Arkansas early. Using 4 of 5 shots in the first quarter, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc, she scored 10 points.
Mike Neighbors, the coach of Arkansas, remarked, “You can yell all you want about trying to keep Mikaylah Williams from getting to
her spot.” “I defy anyone among you to go outside and attempt to watch over her. It is not possible for you. I think she gets to her positions as well as any child since Maya Moore, the former star of UConn.”
