Last night, Leeds United ultimately advanced to the FA Cup’s fifth round.
Even though 210 minutes of football were played, Leeds’ superiority against Plymouth Argyle was finally evident as they easily
defeated them 4-1 in overtime.
After 90 minutes of play, Leeds was once again kept to a 1-1 draw; however, the difference was made by the depth of players available
off the bench, with Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter emerging as the two standout players with a goal and an assist apiece.
Summerville came off the bench for Leeds in stoppage time, but his brilliant cameo in extra time made up for it. Daniel Farke did not
bring him on until the ninetieth minute.
Speaking during the game’s post-match news conference, Farke explains he decided not to substitute Summerville sooner because the
player has been dealing with “some strains” lately.
Summerville pushing over the pain threshold
“Not tempted to put him in earlier,” he remarked. created a lot of strain on him in the last several weeks and caused some muscle
aches.
We held off on bringing him in against worn-out opponents until the very last minute because we anticipated having more time. They
might not be prepared to follow his moves if they are tired. For that, this was the strategy.
Fans undoubtedly would have cried out for Farke’s debut earlier in the game when it was close, so this is some smart, cautious
management on his part. Actually, an injury kept him out of the first game at Elland Road.
But Leeds just cannot afford to be without Summerville for some of the team’s most crucial games later in the month, including
against Leicester City.
Summerville’s confidence should return after his brief appearance from the bench on Friday night against Bristol City, when he was a
touch wasteful in front of goal.
