Teams are adding peripheral players to their rosters as the 2024 NFL offseason goes on. Similar to other teams, the Kansas City Chiefs
have already signed a few players to reserve/futures contracts. Sadly, on Tuesday, they found themselves on the receiving end of one of
those exchanges.
The Philadelphia Eagles announced on X that offensive lineman Darian Kinnard has signed a futures contract with them. At the
conclusion of Kansas City’s season, Kinnard was a free agent on the practice squad; he is now a former Chief.
Kinnard, who turned 24 in December, played collegiate ball for three years at Kentucky. The Chiefs decided to take a chance on him
with the 145th overall pick after seeing his success along the offensive line.
Kinnard did not break camp with the Chiefs after training camp and the preseason, although he was subsequently added back to the
practice squad. There, he completed the season without being promoted for any of the year’s competitions. Even though the
organization tried to find him a spot at guard and tackle, he never appeared to fit in Kansas City. Back in May, general manager Brett
Veach was candid about Kinnard’s versatility as an insider and outsider. Later in his rookie season, offensive line coach Andy Heck
shared the following observations on the player:
Though the Kinnard investment did not pan out, the Chiefs can still look forward to a number of high-scoring picks in the 2022 NFL
Draft. Blue-chip prospects like Trent McDuffie are among the class’s standout depth players, along with George Karlaftis and Isiah
Pacheco, two starter-level performers. Like Kinnard, Kansas City will close the file on that pick moving forward and turn the page on
his next chapter.
