Teams like Tennessee football can start to finalize their roster decisions now that the college football transfer portal is locked until
August. Naturally, a portion of those components originated from the previous round of transfer portal updates.
The Tennessee Volunteers football team will have eight incoming transfers and twelve exiting, at least until the next window opens.
However, the expectation with every squad is that the newcomers will make a bigger difference than the departing ones.
Josh Heupel, the head coach for the Volunteers in his fourth year, just wrapped up another fantastic season. With their second straight
bowl victory, the Vols finished 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the SEC last season. They were rated 21st in the final College Football Playoff
rankings. But for some, it was a year of slight setbacks.
With wide receivers Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman and quarterback Hendon Hooker at the helm, that squad had one of the finest
offenses in the nation. However, the fact that those players were absent from the Volunteers football squad in 2023 most certainly
explained the little decline.
Fortunately for Tennessee, Nico Iamaleava, a former five-star, appears to be their quarterback of the future. What about his wide
receivers for the upcoming campaign? Along with Squirrel White and four-star pledges Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley to the Class
of 2024, Bru McCoy has confirmed that he would return for the next season.
Heupel continued to search the portal for some experienced players.
Chris Brazzell II, a transfer from Tulane, appears to be the offensive weapon that Heupel, Iamaleava, and the Vols are hoping they
have found.
Under Willie Fritz, the Tulane football team has had two years of success, going 23-5. Chris Brazzell II comes from that program. But
some key players from that Tulane group, like Brazzell, also went for Houston after Fritz did.
According to 247sports, Brazzell enters Knoxville as the No. 15 overall wide receiver and the No. 70 overall transfer portal athlete. As a
redshirt freshman, Brazzell caught 44 passes for 711 yards with an average of 16.2 yards per catch in 13 games, along with five
touchdowns.
Nico Iamaleava will benefit immensely from the assistance of Chris Brazzell II.
Although Iamaleava’s role as the Vols’ starting quarterback is still up in the air, it’s clear that he will require assistance in his first full
season as a starter. Joe Milton III, the starter from the previous season, suffered from a lack of receiver support. Milton was never in
the same serious danger as Hooker was with Hyatt or even Tillman in the prior season. The fact that USC transfer Bru McCoy
sustained an injury in the middle of the season severely reduced the output from the wide receiver room.
Brazzell, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 195 pounds, is a valuable addition to the Tennessee football team and can assist with deep
ball reception. Brazzell is the Tennessee football team’s most devious transfer portal addition because of this.
