There was a hole on the back end of the New York Giants’ defense going into the 2023 campaign. The Giants faced
the challenge of replacing veteran safety Julian Love’s output after he left in free agency. Jason Pinnock, a third-year
safety who has dominated the starting spot and enjoyed a breakout campaign, stepped in.
Jason Pinnock’s campaign is really taking off.
Pinnock has racked up 65 total stops this season, including five tackles for loss, four passes defensed, one forced
fumble, and one interception that he returned 102 yards for a touchdown.
Pinnock onto the field with fellow safety Xavier McKinney, and he has performed well. In the first four games of the
season, he had some lackluster efforts against the Cowboys, Cardinals, 49ers, and Seahawks. However, he recovered
to grab that pick-six against the Dolphins in Week 5, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Pinnock has only missed three tackles in the team’s last nine games, following six in the opening three games of the
season. Additionally, since Week 5, he hasn’t given up a score in coverage.
Pinnock has received an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 65.7 for the season. After some early-season setbacks,
Pinnock has been improving his grade steadily since Week 5.
In Giants DC Wink Martindale’s defense, Pinnock is at last at ease.
It took Pinnock some time to get used to Giants DC Wink Martindale’s defensive scheme, he told the New York Post.
However, he is much more at ease and aware of his role now, which enables him to perform at such a high level.
“Knowing [my role] at last,” Pinnock said to The New York Post. “Those who are not part of the system are unaware
of what it’s like to be thrown into one; last year, I arrived ten days prior to the opening game. You’re not
comprehending every piece that’s in front of you; instead, you’re playing the game based solely on memory.
