Monday marks the departure of billionaire and former Spurs owner Red McCombs, and the city of San Antonio is in sorrow. He was
ninety-five.
The McCombs family issued a statement after learning of his demise.
McCombs was a member of the team that leased the American Basketball Association’s Dallas Chaparrals in 1972. McCombs was a
driving force behind the Chaparrals’ relocation to San Antonio, where they eventually evolved into the modern-day Spurs.
McCombs was a member of the group that ultimately bought the Spurs because of the team’s success in San Antonio. Despite selling
his Spurs shares in the late 1970s, McCombs remained a significant influence in the community.
After owning sports teams in other places, McCombs came back to San Antonio and joined the Arena Football League, where he
managed the San Antonio Force until their dissolution in 1992.
Despite having sold his sports team to the Minnesota Vikings in 2005, McCombs’s legacy endures thanks to his family’s business
school naming and his contributions to the University of Texas.
