Havana, Cuba, February 13, 2024 — 14ymedio Jorge Soler, a baseball player from Cuba, signed a three-year contract worth $42
million with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. He is the “first baseball player born on the Island to wear this uniform since Alex
Sánchez (in 2005),” according to journalist Francys Romero.
The habanero forfeited a $13 million salary with the Miami Marlins in November of last year. Soler chose free agency after spending
more than six years in the Major Leagues. His agent, MVP Sports Group, shuffled the pieces, and there were rapprochements with the
storied San Francisco squad of the National League’s Western Division.
Soler’s season salary with the Giants is $14 million, making him the third best paid player in the team, only surpassed by Robbie Ray
($23 million) and Michael Conforto ($18 million), two Americans.
At the age of eighteen, this outfielder departed the Island in 2010. Though his first goal was to play for a Major League team, he set off
for Haiti on a raft with his father. He signed a deal with the Chicago Cubs in 2012 after moving to the United States, and on August 27,
2014, he made his debut.
He joined the Kansas City Royals team in 2016. However, he was demoted and sent to the Omaha Storm Chasers of the Minor Leagues
as a result of a string of injuries and inconsistent play. In 2018, he went back to Kansas and played in 61 games, compiling a batting
average of.265 and nine home runs. Soler was traded back to the Atlanta Braves on July 30, 2021, along with Kasey Kalich.
During the World Series in which the Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros, Soler was awarded the game’s most valuable player
in the same year.
Jorge Soler has a batting average of.243, 736 hits, 170 home runs, and 452 runs in the Major Leagues.
Soler’s contract is identical to the one that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. signed with the Diamondbacks in December of last year. Gurriel can
choose to leave the organization in 2026 or accept new offers, and he can choose to extend his contract with the Arizona squad for $14
million in 2027, according to the magazine MLB.
Thus, Jorge Soler and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. join José Abreu at the top of the list of the highest-paid Cuban athletes, who plays for the
Houston Astros and makes $19.5 million a season. Yasmani Grandal receives a salary from the Chicago White Sox of $18.2 million. On
the same squad is Yoan Moncada, who makes $17.8 million a season. With the Atlanta Braves, Raisel Iglesias gets awarded $16
million.
