One of general manager Brad Holmes’ top priorities as the Detroit Lions head into the summer is giving quarterback Jared Goff an
extension, as he approaches the last year of his current deal. After the season is finished, such conversations will undoubtedly get more
intense.
Eric Woodyard, the ESPN Lions beat writer, raised the crucial query about Goff’s contract extension back in late December.
It is inevitable that the annual sum under Goff’s new contract will be between $45 and $50 million. The most popular forecast appears
to be four years, which would take Goff through the 2028 season.
Goff’s advantages, disadvantages, and restrictions are now widely recognized. But for the foreseeable future, he will be the quarterback
for the Lions.
A former general manager of the NFL advises against extending Jared Goff’s deal.
Thomas Dimitroff, the former general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, recently gave an NFL offseason preview on ESPN’s “This is
Football” show. The Lions and Goff’s impending contract extension was one of the subjects discussed.
“Look, I believe that Jared Goff has done a great deal for Brad Holmes’ organization. Well done, he threw a lot of darts early on,”
Dimitroff remarked. “When I see him, I can’t help but feel that there must be market worth between us. You have to be careful about
how far you go there because I don’t think you can be held to. You might address Jared and the agency directly and say, “See, we
Dimitroff makes a valid point when he says that the Lions must strike a careful balance with Goff’s contract extension. He then went a
bit too far, though.
“It’s not as though he’s at the height of his abilities,” Dimitroff went on. “What he’s accomplished has truly impressed me. I must raise
my hand; I did not anticipate that.
On October 14, of next season, Goff will turn thirty. Although he isn’t exactly a youthful quarterback, he isn’t ancient or past his peak
either. It’s acceptable and somewhat justified to wonder where he stands to gain from this point on. However, it’s a stretch to say that
he’s headed into his career’s downturn.
