During Matt LaFleur’s career, the Packers won the coin toss 39 times and decided to defer. Then LaFleur made the decision to accept
during their Thanksgiving victory against Detroit. After that, he opted to receive twice more during the regular season, and once more
on Sunday against the Cowboys in the playoffs.
Why was it changed? The Packers claim that their offense’s desire to get the ball and get going aggressively was the cause of the change
in mentality.
Adam Stenavich, the offensive coordinator for the Packers, stated, “I think the guys just feed off it.” “The players’ excitement to go get
the ball and get going, as well as the coaches’ confidence in them.” Whenever you can get out to a quick start and score seven points in
the first drive,
Packers guard Jon Runyan noted that the Dallas fans was significantly subdued by Green Bay’s initial offensive drive following the
opening kickoff.
Runyan stated, “I believe it’s the mindset; Coach LaFleur has been going out there and wanting the ball [after] the coin toss.” “You
kind of feel like you’re fighting much more uphill if you don’t start out quickly. That was one of the loudest audiences I’ve ever heard
during the opening drive and the first third down. The crowd became incredibly silent as the game progressed through the second and
third quarters. It helps to get out to a quick start, score 20 points right away, and have their offense operating in two-minute
increments. It is very essential for traveling and getting off to a quick start in a playoff game.
Coach Kyle Shanahan of San Francisco said that if the 49ers win the toss tomorrow night, he will defer. It appears like the Packers will
start on offensive in any case.
