The NFL’s top team, the Philadelphia Eagles, began the season 10-1, but even with their victories, there were signs of trouble that, if
left unchecked, would lead to worse times down the road.
Despite Eagles coach Nick Sirianni’s best efforts to shake things up, the inevitable doom eventually arrived, and Philadelphia ended
the season on the losing end of a Wild Card Round game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had just won the worst division in
football history.
Eagles lineman Jordan Mailata told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “I think there has to be a finger pointed somewhere when the season
ends the way it did.” “That is the way the cards are dealt.” I’m not sure what transpired. They hardly ever discuss it with us players. But
somebody needs to [leave] when you witness that level of [losing]. That’s just how the business operates.
More changes have been made, and former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was one of the guys let go, whether he had to or not.
Under Sirianni, Johnson was a one-and-done offensive coordinator after being selected to take Shane Steichen’s place, who was
recruited to lead the Indianapolis Colts after the Eagles’ previous Super Bowl success.
His dismissal occurred during the offseason, and Sirianni took over as defensive coordinator throughout the season—if not in title, at
least in function. After three significant coaching changes since the end of the season alone, Matt Patricia, who was his replacement, is
no longer with the organization.
Not as much was made of the loss of two coordinators in one offseason as it clearly should have been, since many saw Sirianni as a
head coach who could bring in new players from the same great core and take them back to the top of the NFC.
Clearly, we were in error.
With Vic Fangio on the defensive and Kellen Moore leading the offense, Philadelphia is relying on more seasoned coordinators this
time around.
It is assumed that neither man will require much if
If it fails this time, Mailata will once again be playing for a new coach and coordinator and the star player won’t be able to hide behind
the play of his helpers.
That is, after all, “the nature of the business.”
