NASHVILLE — Dennard Wilson, the new defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, faces a difficult challenge in reconstructing a
unit that has had difficulty stopping the pass.
As a defensive backs coach in the National Football League, Wilson established his reputation.
The Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns shared the top 5.9 yards allowed per pass average in 2023. Against the Ravens,
opponents completed just 60.6% of their throws, which was the fifth-best defensive average in the previous season.
Along with ranking first in terms of fewest points allowed—just 16.5 per game—the Ravens also tied for top in terms of takeaways—18
of which came from interceptions.
Wilson led the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in Super Bowl LVII in 2022 by coaching the NFL’s top pass defense, which gave up just
179.8 yards per game.
Wilson is now in command of the Titans defense, which was among the worst in the NFL:
lowest number of interceptions, highest passing yards allowed, and 31st in turnover generation.
Wilson has to deal with a defense that could use reinforcements under the direction of Titans executive vice president and general
manager Ran Carthon and head coach Brian Callahan.
Jeffrey Simmons, a lineman, is a solid foundation for the defensive line. With 89 targets, cornerback Roger McCreary (contract
through 2025) did not allow any touchdowns.
However, the Titans have 24 free agents, including starting cornerbacks Kristian Fulton and Sean Murphy-Bunting and top tackler
Azeez Al-Shaair.
When NFL teams are able to sign free agents in the middle of March, the talent hunt really gets going. The Titans will have another
opportunity to rebuild in the late April 2024 NFL Draft.
