Contract disputes and Tottenham Hotspur have not made for the best of bedfellows in previous years, and it doesn’t appear that this
summer will be any different.
Many long-serving Spurs players have reached their final year or even the end of their lengthy contracts, which has created situations
that have either forced Daniel Levy, the club’s chairman, to make difficult decisions or left him and the team helpless to watch as the
player decided on the next steps in their career. Some of these players have been sitting on high contracts until the very last minute,
when they become free agents and can choose from any club.
The most well-known incident of the previous summer included record-scoring player Harry Kane, who was entering the final year of
his contract. Spurs could not afford to lose him for free, so they sold their best player to Bayern Munich.
Both Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier found themselves in comparable situations as they approached the last year of their contracts. While
the former sat around until a January transfer to Los Angeles FC materialized, the latter agreed to a loan move with Bayern that would
become permanent this July.
While Davinson Sanchez was traded in September as he headed into his final season, Ivan Perisic has accomplished something similar
with Hajduk Split when his contract with the Spurs expires in June. Last summer, Lucas Moura left Tottenham after the club chose
not to exercise the year-long option on his contract. Despite not being registered to play in the Premier League, Danny Rose famously
sat out the entire last year of his contract at the club before quitting for no reason in 2022.
The primary issue facing Tottenham, Levy, and Ange Postecoglou this summer is that their contracts are about to expire in 2025 and
are entering their final year, which will have an effect on the club’s transfer operations. Son Heung-min, the team’s captain and
current outstanding player, won’t be one
The north London team currently has five first team players out of contract this summer, including Dier and Perisic, and another
twelve if we include Son before that option is triggered. This means that there are a ton of decisions to be made elsewhere in the squad.
These players will only have a year left on their contracts.
Timo Werner’s loan from RB Leipzig is one of the contracts that expires this summer. Tottenham will need to choose whether to
exercise the option to bring the German player to the team permanently for approximately £15 million.
In the summer of 2019, Ryan Sessegnon signed a contract worth over £30 million, with the option for the club to add a sixth year. The
23-year-old left-back’s injury-plagued year will force Spurs to decide whether to cut him loose, give him another season to possibly
recoup a loan fee this summer, transfer money in January, or just hope that he can rekindle his career at Tottenham. Sessegnon has
had two operations this year, which should put an end to his hamstring problems.
Additionally, goalkeeper Brandon Austin’s contract expires this summer, but due to the Spurs’ dearth of domestic players with club
experience, they may decide to extend it as a
