The terrible news that Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, had to miss his required
postgame press conference on Sunday afternoon due to a “family emergency” was that his girlfriend’s stepfather had
passed away.
After falling outside Arrowhead Stadium prior to kickoff, Brittany Matthews said on Instagram that her stepfather,
Paul, “did not come back from this” and “was called to heaven.” According to some accounts, Paul Matthews was at
the game with Mahomes’s father. Paramedics arrived fast and took him to a nearby hospital.
I will always remember today! I raced to the front door just after taking this photo and saw my stepdad unconscious!
He was summoned to heaven today and did not return from this! She said, “I KNOW 100% that he is so happy up
there with his kids looking down on us cheering loud that his chiefs won today!” and included two photos—one of
him holding his hand and one from the hospital. “I appreciate all of the well wishes and kind texts. Paul, we shall
miss you. Very Very Very Much! For you, I will look after your mother!
In the Chiefs’ 26-14 victory over Arizona, Mahomes established a single-season record with his 31st touchdown
throw. Coach Andy Reid stated that Mahomes had missed the interview due to a “family emergency.” Mahomes has
not responded.
