Two candidates will be interviewed for the vacant offensive coordinator post with the Las Vegas Raiders: Luke Getsy and Alex Van
Pelt, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tim Pelissero on Tuesday. Both contenders were quarterback coaches for the Green
Bay Packers during the Davante Adams era, which is noteworthy because the wide out is the team’s current face.
In 2012, Van Pelt started his career in Green Bay as the running backs coach. He stayed in that role for two seasons until becoming the
quarterbacks coach. After his tenure with the organization ended in 2018, he spent two years coaching quarterbacks for the Cincinnati
Bengals before joining the Cleveland Browns as their offensive coordinator in 2020. He remained in that role until his departure this
summer.
Back in 2019, Matt LaFleur hired Getsy as his first quarterbacks coach. He was then elevated to the position of offensive passing game
coordinator for the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. He has previously served as the receivers coach for the Packers in 2016 and 2017.
Notably, in his two seasons as Adams’ positional coach under Getsy, his output increased significantly. After joining the team, Adams
caught 88 passes for 929 yards and four touchdowns in his first two years. In the next two seasons, he had 2,271 yards, 23
touchdowns, and 149 catches while playing for Getsy.
Tom Clements, the quarterbacks coach who is currently in his second tenure with the organization, was expressed earlier this week by
LaFleur as someone who hoped to return to the team in 2024. Nevertheless, LaFleur maintained that Clements deserved the freedom
to choose his own path. Nothing is off the table for the 70-year-old coach Clements, who has previously announced his retirement
once. Because of his relationship with LaFleur, it was assumed that Getsy would be considered for a quarterback coaching post if
Clements was sidelined and he remained available.
LaFleur has consistently maintained that the offensive team has a very cooperative strategy, meaning that coaches are more involved
in the process of game preparation than with actual playmaking.
Watch the offensive coordinator carousel closely because, following the team’s explosive start to the season with the youngest offense
in recent NFL history, one or more Packers coaches may have the chance to go. Who knows? LaFleur may even let offensive
coordinator and former offensive line coach Adam Stenavich go in search of a possible play-calling gig. Getsy was apparently LaFleur’s
initial pick for offensive coordinator back in 2022, when the organization was trying to replace Nathaniel Hackett. However, when
Getsy was given the chance to call plays for the Chicago Bears, LaFleur declined the chance to obstruct the interview.
