On Saturday, it was not the Tennessee Volunteers’ night.
The No. 11 Volunteers swiftly suffered a 29-16 defeat as they traveled to Gainesville to face the Florida Gators.
The Volunteers had seemed like they could make some noise later in the season after their 2-0 start. However, they now face defeat.
Only managing 16 points was a major letdown for the offense, considering Tennessee had hammered 49 points against Virginia in
Week 1 and 30 points against Austin Peay in Week 2. In terms of statistics, it didn’t appear as awful because the Volunteers gained 388
yards in total, but this was mostly in the latter parts of the game, so it might be viewed as an exaggerated total.
Two touchdowns, an interception, and 287 yards were gained by Joe Milton III on 20 of his 34 passes. On the other hand, wide
receiver Bru McCoy had five catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, while Jaylen Wright led the team in carries with 16 for 63 yards.
Nevertheless, it was unable to land any knockout blows, and Tennessee will depart Gainesville having not defeated Florida at home
since 2003.
Social media users were not holding back when they criticized Tennessee for their lackluster offensive display against a Gators squad
that was ready to defeat them.
For the Volunteers to be competitive in SEC play, they will need to bounce back quickly. They will first focus on a Group of Five
opponent in UTSA the following weekend.
After that, Tennessee will resume play in the SEC, facing Alabama, Texas A&M, and South Carolina in that order.
