In a deal on Friday, the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants acquired veteran right-hander Ross Stripling and cash in return
for outfielder/infielder Jonah Cox.
With eight years of experience, the 34-year-old Stripling has played for the Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He
had an unsatisfactory season in San Francisco, going 0–5 in 22 games with a 5.36 ERA. With the pandemic year of 2020 eliminated,
he only pitched 89.0 innings, the fewest in a complete season since 2017.
He is a 38–43 pitcher with a 3.96 ERA during his career. Although he ended the season with Toronto, Stripling helped the Dodgers
win the World Series in 2020 and was named to the All-Star team in 2018.
If healthy, Stripling should consider himself a candidate for the Opening Day starter right away in Oakland. There is now no shortage
of choices for the rebuilding A’s starting rotation, with Paul Blackburn, Mason Miller, Kyle Muller, Alex Wood, Ken Waldichuk, and JP
Sears among the other options.
Even while the lineup isn’t very impressive, it is an improvement over the club from the previous season, who finished with the lowest
team ERA in the American League (5.48).
Last season, the Athletics finished with the poorest record in MLB despite using 39 pitchers. The A’s revealed that they want to leave
Oakland soon, which only made the situation worse.
They intend to relocate to Las Vegas, where they will join the Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors as clubs who have recently
left the Bay Area.
Cox played a full season of professional ball after being selected in the 2023 draft. His batting average was.287.
