And he’s gone without warning.
The San Francisco 49ers have formally released defensive tackle Arik Armstead, who has been a member of the team for the longest.
The 49ers offered Armstead a pay cut, but he turned them down, and as a result, he is now free to sign with any team.
According to reports, the 49ers have decided to hold off on signing Armstead until after June 1 in an effort to save money ($18
million). Either way, with him gone, they are eating a lot of dead money. In addition to the $15.5 million in dead money on the 49ers’
2025 salary ceiling, Armstead will have to account for $10.3 million in dead money this year.
You have to ask yourself if it was truly worth it to release him. Although Armstead is still a reasonably high-level player, the 49ers
aren’t really saving all that much here. The players don’t appear to be all that happy of the change either. Deebo Samuel, who recently
shared many “face palm” emoticons on Instagram in response to the announcement of Armstead’s release, seems to think otherwise.
Will the 49ers be sorry they let Armstead go?
Only if Armstead unexpectedly enjoys a healthy 2024 season will they regret it. His performances didn’t really have much to do with
his release. He can still have a sufficient influence as a competent player. However, Armstead’s body is actually disintegrating. He is no
longer a player the 49ers can count on.
Armstead is essentially what the 49ers had him when he initially started his career again, but now that he is older and has a lot of
experience, it makes sense. In his past two seasons, he was limited to just 21 games due to somewhat identical problems. Plantar
fasciitis was the first, and it returned this year. It was a shattered foot the next time, and this season it was a ruptured meniscus.
The 49ers had good reason to request that Armstead accept a wage reduction. With almost $80 million in career earnings, it seemed
likely that he would consent. It’s likely that he will miss games in 2024 once more and maybe
In addition, the funds that the summer will release will be well-utilized to fund an extension for Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers won’t feel
bad about Armstead’s release if that turns out to be the case.
