In the 2024 offseason, the Dallas Cowboys are planning their next move, which may include signing a wide receiver in free agency.
Though there are plenty of possibilities, the Cowboys currently need to be cost-conscious as well.
For this reason, the scouting section of Bleacher Report has connected Dallas to a trade for wide receiver Curtis Samuel of the
Washington Commanders. Samuel, who had another strong year, is experimenting with free agency this offseason.
The report from February 19 states, “The Cowboys shouldn’t focus too heavily on adding a wideout, with CeeDee Lamb leading a
talented receiver group.” But it would be shocking to see Dallas keep both Michael Gallup and Brandin Cooks, who are both possible
cap casualties. Possible deal without a deal
Brown is a compelling alternative as well, perhaps more so in terms of story. Brown was selected by the Cowboys in the seventh round
of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he played five seasons there. Though Brown is no slouch, Samuel is probably the candidate with a larger
ceiling and floor.
In either case, the Cowboys will have to think outside the box to enhance the offense.
Samuel’s Time with the Panthers and Commanders Cowboys supporters have had a chance to get to know Samuel in recent years,
even if he is an adversary. The former Ohio State wide receiver has played three seasons in Washington after being drafted by the
Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Pro Football Reference states that 2020 was his finest statistical season. With 77 receptions, Samuel gained 851 receiving yards and
three touchdowns. Despite an injury-plagued 2021 season that was a bust, he has been a reliable player for the past two years with the
Commanders.
His final two seasons with the Commanders were so similar, it’s almost unreal. He hauled in 64 catches for 656 yards and four
touchdowns in 2022. He hauled in 62 passes for 613 yards and four scores in 2023.
It’s a pleasant constancy, even though the statistics don’t jump off the page. Samuel’s stats do not ensure that the Cowboys will
improve the wide receiver corps to a truly elite level.
