TUSCALOOSA, Alabama: The Dodd Trophy, which is awarded annually to the FBS football coach who most
exemplifies the three pillars of success—scholarship, leadership, and integrity—has announced Nick Saban, head
coach of Alabama, as a finalist for 2023.
Saban is one of five finalists, along with Mike Norvell of Florida State, Eliah Drinkwitz of Missouri, Kalen DeBoer of
Washington, and Jedd Fisch of Arizona.
For the eighth time in ten years, Saban has guided the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoffs. After losing its
opening game, Alabama went on to win 11 straight games, including an SEC title against Georgia, which was ranked
#1 at the time.
Additionally, Saban is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant Awards.
In its 47-year history, the Dodd Trophy has been given to two Alabama coaches: Nick Saban in 2014 and Bill Curry in
1989. The honor has been given since 1976.
Last year’s winner was Willie Fritz of Tulane.
Over the weekend, the Crimson Tide started getting ready for No. 1 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Alabama could earn
the program’s 19th national championship if they prevail.
Six of those came under Saban’s direction, as the Crimson Tide won national titles in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017,
and 2020.
