Observations
An NFC North club led by a former Alabama star is getting closer to winning its first division championship since
1993.
When the NFC North was the NFC Central, the Detroit Lions were the last team in the NFL to win a division
championship.
The Lions haven’t won a divisional championship in thirty years, and it hasn’t advanced to the postseason in six. The
Lions have a rookie running back selected at No. 12 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft named Jahmyr Gibbs who can
help them achieve both goals. He helped the Detroit Lions defeat the Denver Broncos at home on Sunday, their
eleventh win of the season. Gibbs gained 100 yards through rushes on two touchdowns overall on 11 carries,
including a Jared Goff touchdown reception. He gained two receptions and averaged 9.1 yards per rush attempt.
Gibbs has recorded two runs of 100 yards or more and four games with 100 yards or more from scrimmage.
The Lions defeated the Broncos 42–17 to win their fifth game at Ford Field this year.
Goff described Gibbs as “one of the best rookies he has ever been around” to reporters following the game. He broke
numerous rookie records for the Lions, including the most scrimmage yards in the team’s existence. Gibbs is the
seventh rookie in Detroit’s history to finish a season with 1,000 yards rushing from the line of scrimmage. In all, he
has 8 touchdowns, 296 receiving yards, and 792 rushing yards.
For fans of Detroit and owners of fantasy football, Gibbs has been a welcome surprise. He gives this offense the
tenacity and explosiveness it needs to match up with any team in the league. The Lions think they can contend for a
postseason run under Gibbs.
