The Denver Broncos’ chances of making the playoffs were severely damaged on Saturday when they fell to the
Detroit Lions 42-17.
The Broncos made a lot of errors both on offense and defense, which soured the game. When it came to preventing
some of the Lions’ most prolific offensive players, their defensive game was lacking. The Broncos had several
offensive opportunities that they were unable to take advantage of.
Denver had two potential touchdowns in one play in the third quarter ruled back by the officials. One involved Jaleel
McLaughlin on a run that the officials flagged as ending short of the goal line even though there was proof he had
crossed it. Quinn Meinerz, the offensive lineman, was ruled offsides during a run by Michael Burton, which resulted
in the other possible touchdown being called back.
Social media went crazy after Meinerz’s offsides call, with many people furious about the mishandled call.
As implied by Adam Schefter’s tweet, Sean Payton, the head coach, was furious. Angry, really, very angry. Payton was
fuming over the mishandled referee calls and his inability to take advantage of scoring opportunities. Videos of
Payton scolding quarterback Russell Wilson on the sidelines have emerged. Wilson appeared to be merely listening
while Payton was clearly tearing him out.
The questions regarding the postgame outburst poured in for the Broncos head coach.
“I was annoyed by the call. Easy, said Payton. “That’s it.”
When pressed further about the situation, Payton made it plain that he didn’t want to get into more detail.
Payton shot out, “What I talk to Russell about is none of your business.”
Wilson was questioned about the interaction as well, but he declined to provide any details. Rather, he took a good
takeaway from it.
The Broncos quarterback stated, “That’s our focus—we all want to score there.” “We are looking for a passionate
coach.”
