DETROIT: The Broncos are probably still a contender for the postseason. That doesn’t alter after the Detroit Lions’
supercharged offense was thrashed 42–17 on Saturday.
The remaining three teams the Broncos play will all start backup quarterbacks. Pittsburgh is stumbling around.
Unless there is an unusual tie (they meet in Week 18), Cleveland or Cincinnati will suffer at least one more loss, and
the Broncos have the advantage in tiebreakers for both teams. Cleveland and Houston are facing each other. In Week
18, Houston takes on Indianapolis.
You get the idea.
However, the Broncos will have difficulty winning a certain kind of game and matchup, as demonstrated by their loss
on Saturday.
It’s against a club with plenty of speed at the offensive skill positions, a drive-off-the-snap offensive line, and a
creative defensive that can put together pressure packages.
The Lions were in a wonderful position to crush since the first two are the most important components. Running
backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery tore through the enormous openings in the box while Jared Goff
skillfully distributed the ball around to Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Josh Reynolds, and Sam LaPorta.
With the defense stretched thin trying to contain all of those threats,
The Lions scored 4 touchdowns via the air, 7.7 yards per carry on the ground, and the Broncos were having their
worst day since the Miami fiasco by the time Gibbs raced into the end zone with a 15-yard touchdown 2:48 into the
fourth quarter. A fitting conclusion to the carnage came from a last touchdown reception by LaPorta, on a fourth
down no less.
Inside linebacker Alex Singleton remarked, “We sucked tonight.”
It was “Miami Lite” in downtown Detroit, but it was a timely reminder that the Broncos have a ceiling and a matchup
they lack the strength to win, even though they are still in a strong postseason position with three games remaining
against bad teams managed by backup quarterbacks.
Courtland Sutton said in the team locker room following the loss that the Broncos are good. You can’t win six out of
eight games, including five victories over teams that are definitely in the running for the playoffs, unless you’re
playing at that caliber.
For all the reasons mentioned above, they are still aiming for the playoffs.
But is there something more that might enable them to have an incredible postseason run? For now at least, it
appears that the Broncos are unable to accomplish that.
