Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis, Justin Ellis, three seasoned defensive tackles, and linebacker Reuben Foster were all
worked out by the Miami Dolphins; Ellis was the only one signed.
As the club enters the final stretch of the season, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio may have some concerns about
the Miami Dolphins’ defensive line, which is why the team is finally strengthening it.
A day after he tried out with Trevon Coley and Carlos Davis, two other defensive linemen, Miami signed defensive
tackle Justin Ellis, a nine-year veteran who has played for Oakland (2014–18), Baltimore (2019–21), and the New
York Giants (2022). Ellis is 6-foot-2 and weighs 334 pounds.
In 117 career games, Ellis has made 54 starts and amassed 182 tackles (100 solo), 1.5 sacks, and three passes
defensed. The former NFL draft pick, selected in the fourth round in 2014, has participated in five postseason
contests.
He joins defensive lineman Byron Cowart and Brandon Pili on the practice squad, which usually aids the first-team
offense in getting ready for every opponent. During the regular season, players from the practice squad are eligible to
be called up three times to the 53-man roster to play in games.
As far as we know, none of the four players on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster—Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Raekwon
Davis, and Da’Shawn Hand—are currently dealing with a serious injury.
The Dolphins cut safety Verone McKinley III, a former Oregon standout who has been with the team for the past two
seasons, to make way for Ellis on the 16-man practice squad.
In his ten games as a player, McKinley made two starts, all for the Dolphins in 2022.
Throughout his NFL career, he has racked up 16 tackles (10 solo), 1 interception, and 1 pass defensed.
Although McKinley was the sole safety on Miami’s practice squad, the team’s other starters, Jevon Holland and
De’Shon Elliott, as well as cornerback Nik Needham,
Ellis participated in training camp with the Atlanta Falcons but was not included in the practice squad or 53-man
roster.
Due to Jerome Baker’s Sunday knee injury versus the Washington Commanders, the Dolphins are also in need of
some linebacker assistance.
In an attempt to strengthen the depth of that unit, Miami brought in Reuben Foster, a former first-round choice, for
a workout on Wednesday. However, Foster made it known on social media that he would not be signing.
Although it’s unclear at this point if Foster was the only inside linebacker Miami worked out this week, it’s
conceivable Miami’s coaches and decision-makers are concerned about depth because Channing is now the only
player behind David Long Jr. and Duke Riley.
Alexander Johnson is also on Miami’s practice squad. Johnson may be added to the game day roster for three games
—the maximum number of promotions practice squad players are permitted to get before being promoted to the 53-
man roster.
