The Chicago White Sox and former SF Giants outfielder Kevin Pillar ave agreed to a minor-league contract. If Pillar makes the team’s
Opening Day roster, he will be paid a base salary of $3 million,
according to Adams. As an 11-year MLB veteran, Pillar has been a big league player with the Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta, Los Angeles
Dodgers, Giants, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, and New York Mets.
During the previous season, Pillar was the main fourth outfielder for Atlanta, batting.228/.248/.416 in 206 plate appearances with 10
doubles, 9 home runs, and 4 stolen bases. Pillar played mostly in left field and had an appearance in exactly half of Atlanta’s games
(81). Although Pillar has played center field in recent seasons, he is no longer a strong defensive option there. Pillar was once an
excellent defensive center fielder.
After being selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 32nd round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Cal State Dominguez Hills, Pillar played
his first few years of professional ball with them. After making his club debut in 2013, the right-hander’s love for spectacular defensive
plays helped him establish a regular position as the Blue Jays center fielder by 2015. Between 2015 and 2018, Pillar
Early in the 2019 season, the Blue Jays traded Pillar to the Giants in exchange for a three-player transaction that included Derek Law,
Allen Hansen, and Jorge De Paula, as the defense started to deteriorate. Despite the fact that the Giants will finish considerably
below.500 in 2019, Pillar remained one of their few reliable players. Pillar played in 156 games for the Giants, posting a.264/.293/.442
triple-slash with 37 doubles, three triples, and 21 home runs despite spending the first week of the season in Toronto. His colleagues
were impressed by his performance as well, and he was given the prestigious Willie Mac Award.
The Giants decided not to re-sign Pillar after the season, despite the fact that he had made a significant contribution, in order to save
money on his last season of arbitration eligibility. Ultimately, Pillar agreed to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Red Sox, and
in the 54 games between the Red Sox and Rockies during the pandemic-shortened season, he had an even stronger offensive season.
The last time Pillar signed a major-league contract through free agency, he did it with the Mets for $2.9 million over one season. With
a.231/.277/.415 line and 15 home runs in 347 plate appearances (124 games), Pillar was a very good role player. But it was more
difficult to defend assigning him a regular role given his deteriorating defensive prowess.
Since then, Pillar has signed minor league contracts with Atlanta and the Dodgers. Before moving to Atlanta over the summer, he
played in just four major league games with the Dodgers in 2022. Kevin Pillar will now try to win a spring training spot with the White
Sox.
