Luke spent three seasons serving as our backup catcher. The Rays placed him on waivers, and the Jays claimed him in April 2017.
With two home runs in 136 PA and a batting average of.146/.176/.231, he had a terrible 2017 season. Luke had a wRC+ of 1. In his
post, Matt discussed how his season stacks up against the most devastating ones of the twenty-first century and then contrasts it with
the worst of the contemporary age.
In 2017, it wasn’t just Maile. Matt also wrote on how the backup catchers, including Maile, were the worst-performing group in Blue
Jays history at the end of the season.
In 231 PA in 2018, Luke hit a significantly better.248/.333/.366 with 3 home homers. That was sufficient in spite of this video to get
Minor
Luke became Danny Jansen’s backup in 2019 when Russell Martin was traded to the Dodgers. His bat fell back to 2017 levels,
batting.151/.205/.235 with two home runs in 129 PA.
Maile became a big leaguer because of his glove. In addition, he ranked highly in framing, had a decent arm, and was somewhat
athletic behind the plate.
He did have a strangely successful at-bat moment for us on April 17, 2018, when he knocked a walk-off single in the 19th inning
against the Royals. On May 11, 2018, he blasted two home runs, one of which was a walk-off in the 12th inning against the Red Sox.
Since leaving Toronto, he has played for the Brewers Guardians and the Reds last season. Luke has played 380 games and batted in
eight seasons.212/.275/.328.
Joyful
Paulino joined us in 2013 when he and Ken Giles were traded for Roberto Osuna by the Astros. Although he was ranked #51 on
Baseball America’s 2017 list of the top 100 prospects, he only made 6.2 innings of relief pitching for the Jays. In 2021, Paulino got into
a Phillies game. He’s no longer playing baseball.
Today, Chad Girodo turns 33.
Chad was selected in the ninth round of the 2013 draft and appeared in a couple games with the Jays in 2016.
