Have the Toronto Blue Jays made their final winter moves? Sportsnet Canada’s Ben Nicholson-Smith says there’s a “good chance”
they’re done adding big names to the roster. What effect will this have on the SF Giants offseason?
The potential effects of the most recent Blue Jays news on the remaining SF Giants offseason
There are multiple ways in which this could impact the Giants. During the winter, the Blue Jays signed Justin Turner and Isiah Kiner-
Falefa in addition to re-signing Kevin Kiermaier.
They also experienced the agony that Giants supporters are all too familiar with. In December, there was a brief period of time when
intense conjecture led one to believe Shohei Ohtani would be joining the Blue Jays. That proved to be untrue, though, as Ohtani signed
a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers the next day. The “Arson Judge” incident occurred for the Giants during the previous winter.
It’s difficult to go from maybe signing Ohtani to acquiring three good players. Despite this, they managed to win 89 games in 2023,
and they will have a large portion of the same roster for this season. Potentially noteworthy replacements may include Matt Chapman
and Brandon Belt.
Turner’s signing suggests that the Blue Jays are probably out on
The Blue Jays are probably no longer in the running for power hitter Jorge Soler as a result of Turner’s arrival. The right-handed hitter
was thought to have a chance to land in Toronto, but they no longer had room for him. However, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco
Chronicle reports that the Giants have apparently shown interest in Soler.
The fact that the Blue Jays are no longer pursuing Chapman may have a greater effect if they decide to stop adding players to their
roster. Naturally, things can change quickly, particularly if Chapman modifies his asking price. But according to a recent MLB insider,
the Giants and the Chicago Cubs are the only teams that can win the veteran third baseman’s market.
The Blue Jays had extended a qualifying offer to Chapman, but he turned it down. As a result, neither team would receive a
compensation pick or money from the international bonus pool when they signed the seven-year veteran. Since adding Jeff Samardzija
to the team in 2015, the Giants have not signed a player who declined a qualifying offer.
It’s interesting to note that the Cubs appear more intent on signing Cody Bellinger to a long-term contract. If they can’t get their main
target back, they might turn to Chapman. Nevertheless, it appears like the Giants are the only teams in Chapman’s inner market, and
his agent, Scott Boras, is attempting to manufacture rivalry that may not exist.
With spring training coming up in a few weeks, the best players will be off the board very soon. The Giants believe that their prospects
of landing Chapman will increase only if Toronto is removed from the picture.
