Signing K Riley Patterson to the Browns

Riley Patterson, who was cut by the Lions once more, cleared waivers on Christmas Day. The teenage kicker has

another job after making more than 88% of his field goal attempts this season.

The Browns, who were shorthanded in their Week 16 matchup for the most of it, promoted Patterson to their

practice squad on Monday. Dustin Hopkins could miss the Browns’ Thursday night game due to a hamstring injury

he suffered against the Texans.

After Cade York had trouble in the preseason, the Browns traded for Hopkins, who has kicked in all 15 of Cleveland’s

games this year. In 13 games this season, Patterson served as Detroit’s kicker; however, following a continuous

Following the Jaguars’ acquisition of Brandon McManus in May of 2022, Patterson rejoined the Lions through a

transaction that included the exchange of a late-round pick. During his second tenure with the Lions, Patterson

made 15 of 17 field goals and 35 of 37 extra points; nonetheless, it was clear in practice that Badgley, who finished the

previous season as Detroit’s kicker, surpassed Patterson. In the last two games for the Lions, Badgley has kicked.

Despite missing 12 games, Hopkins, 33, re-signed with the Chargers last season. This summer at training camp,

Cameron Dicker defeated him for the starting kicker position for the Bolts. Hopkins has made 33 of his NFL-high

field goals with Cleveland, accounting for 91.7% of his total attempts. He’s doing 24 out of 26 PATs.

The former Washington and Los Angeles-based specialist was placed on injured reserve last year after suffering a

hamstring injury during the season. With the Browns getting closer to securing a third postseason appearance since

reviving the organization in 1999, it is important to keep an eye on this current ailment. Depending on how

Cleveland’s season plays out, the Browns placing Hopkins on injured reserve would keep him out of action for the

remainder of the regular season and two postseason games. Because of Badgley’s excellent practice effort, the

Browns have some dependable insurance with this P-squad move.
