Five days after being involved in a car accident, World Superbike Championship racer and 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky

Hayden passed away.

Last Wednesday, when the 35-year-old American was riding his bike along the Italian Riviera near Rimini, a vehicle struck his bike.

Following his transfer to the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where he received treatment in the intensive care unit, Hayden, a

resident of Owensboro, Kentucky, sustained head and chest injuries in the crash.

Following his 12th-place result in the World Superbike Championship race in Imola on May 14, the Red Bull Honda rider was

undergoing training in Italy. The rider was accompanied in the hospital by family members who had come in from the United States.

The physicians at Cesena hospital confirmed Hayden’s death on Monday afternoon, stating that he had experienced “a serious

polytrauma” as a result of the accident.

The medical staff has confirmed the passing of Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who was receiving treatment in the critical care unit of the

Bufalini Hospital in Cesena since last Wednesday, May 17, after suffering a very significant polytrauma the same day, according to a

statement released by the hospital.

In one of the most thrilling seasons in recent memory, Hayden defied the odds to win the 2006 MotoGP championship, defeating the

Italian’s five-year winning run.

Hayden was hailed by Rossi as โ€œone of the best friends I’ve ever had in the paddockโ€ following the announcement of his accident last

week. “Always in my heart, champ,” said Dani Pedrosa, who was Hayden’s teammate in 2006 when he won the world title, in response

to a photo of the American that he shared on Twitter. #69 Nicky, rest in peace.”

Although ‘The Kentucky Kid’ would only win one title in 2006, Hayden would continue competing in MotoGP until 2015. He moved to

the World Superbike Championship the next year, when he won the Malaysian race and was sixth overall in the standings.

After the race in Imola on Sunday, Hayden was ranked thirteenth in the current standings for the season.
