During the first two weeks of free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers were more active than we have ever seen from this organization.
Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett were the only quarterbacks under contract when the offseason began. Omar Khan managed to
transform the quarterback room into a space where Russell Wilson and Justin Fields could flourish, all the while earning additional
draft capital.
Apart from improving the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh, the Steelers signed Patrick Queen, a 24-year-old Pro Bowl linebacker,
and signed S DeShon Elliott and P Cameron Johnston, two excellent players, to cheap contracts.
Sadly, even after the initial wave of free agency, the Steelers still have some glaring weaknesses in their squad. Prior to the 2024 NFL
Draft, Pittsburgh should take care of these top priorities.
1. The center
Right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers do not have a center of the same level on their roster. The financial decision to release Mason Cole,
a former starter, only made the issue worse. Though Herbig has only played center for 49 snaps in his first five seasons in the NFL,
ESPN currently has experienced guard Nate Herbig penciled in as the starting center on the Steelers’ depth chart.
While it’s widely anticipated that Pittsburgh would select a center early in the NFL Draft, it would be improper for them to limit
themselves to just one position. The Steelers need to find someone who can compete with Herbig if they miss out on the top center
prospects in the draft, but their possibilities as a free agency are limited.
2. Tackling offensively
Due to a severe lack of depth, the team’s greatest need following the initial wave of free agency is at center, but offensive tackle isn’t far
behind. As a long-term option, Broderick Jones exhibits great promise, while his opponent does not.
