It’s unlikely that the 49ers will make many notable personnel moves this offseason that would put them in contention for the Super
Bowl. Rather, in order to benefit both now and down the road, a few beginning positions and depth will be retooled.
It’s really difficult to strike a balance between making sure the team can remain competitive even after a small rebuild and continuing
to assemble a quality 53-man roster. This is the reason why most Super Bowl windows end and clubs fall into the trap of NFL
mediocrity right away.
The 49ers’ top goals for this summer are certain things, but after that, depth will emerge as a key component of their list of
requirements. We’ll review the needs list once more before the draft because free agency can cause the ranking to shift.
Normally, we’d say where on the offensive line, but throughout the past few seasons, the 49ers haven’t really addressed this as a
whole; it’s just a general problem. At right tackle and right guard, where Colton McKivitz and Spencer Burford are expected to start,
they could need some upgrades. They must also strengthen their depth so that a single early injury doesn’t derail them, and they must
begin making plans for life after Trent Williams.
After Nick Bosa, the 49ers have a lot of unanswered questions. Had San Francisco not made such a valiant effort to shore up its
defense from front to back, the current state of affairs may be more bearable. To support a secondary that isn’t heavily invested in,
they must produce a pass rush. Bosa’s support from Robert Beal Jr. and Drake Jackson doesn’t give the 49ers much hope that they can
develop the edge rush they need to play defense the way they want to. The 49ers could definitely help solve this need through free
agency. They might also use one or two early-round selections in an effort to locate a long-term starter. offensive line
