A contentious background including accusations of racism dogged one of the two contenders for the West Ham managing post. At
first, it was thought that Paolo Fonseca was the contentious candidate as he couldn’t accept the Spurs position because of tax concerns.
But now it’s known that Christophe Galtier, the former PSG manager, was also entangled in a well-known police probe.
Galtier was accused of racism and prejudice while he was a player for Nice in the Premier League. While still a player with PSG, he was
arrested by the police in June and accused of “moral harassment and discrimination based on ethnic group membership or non-
membership.” These accusations were based on a leaked email in which Galtier is said to have talked about the racial makeup of the
team and stated that he would like to restrict the number of certain ethnicities on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s squad.
Galtier was cleared of all charges during a week-long trial, despite the fact that he was facing serious charges and testimony from
former players accusing him of racial or religious discrimination. The court heard testimony from players who claimed maltreatment,
as well as reports of how Galtier’s relationship with the club’s director of football broke down.
Uncomfortable testimonials in favor of replacing Moyes
During his testimony, Jean Clair Todibo, the top defender for Nice, claimed that Galtier had labeled him a “extremist” and that he had
felt compelled to break his Ramadan fast. Furthermore, player Hicham Boudaoui and former club goalie Teddy Boulhendi also spoke
of feeling pushed to eat on game days.
Galtier acknowledged calling two opposing defenders “King Kong” throughout the trial, but he maintained that the comment was not
racially motivated by pointing to a comparable remark made to a white defense. He insisted that his remarks had nothing to do with
race and everything to do with strength and force.
Even though Galtier was found not guilty, fewer dangerous applicants probably exist.
