Less than two days had passed since the Ohio State women’s basketball team defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in
Knoxville, Tennessee, when they took the court on Tuesday. At the Schottenstein Center, because Ohio University is
an in-state MAC school, the work was not as large.
The first quarter was competitive until the Buckeyes took off and never looked back, winning 85-45 against the
Bobcats.
Ohio University entered the game as significant underdogs, although they didn’t appear to be one at first when it
came to the court defense. By the halfway mark of the first quarter, forward Rebeka Mikulášiková had made the lone
three-point shot for the Buckeyes, who were now only 1 for 7 from the field.
This is due to the Bobcats’ defensive perimeter dominance, which limited the space available for players like
forwards Cotie McMahon and Taylor Thierry to
After making adjustments, head coach Kevin McGuff chose to attack the paint, depending more on Thierry and
McMahon. It paid off as Ohio State responded with a 6-for-10 shooting effort to close the first quarter. Thierry
scored seven points and McMahon added four, giving the scarlet and gray a 16–6 lead. Ten points were scored as a
result of turnovers.
The Buckeyes outscored the Athens, Ohio team 17–11 thanks to their disciplined defense. The Bobcats made two
deep shots and missed additional opportunities to score.
Much of the same occurred at the start of the second quarter, although guard Celeste Taylor provided a moment that
Buckeyes supporters would recognize. To her scarlet and gray, the Big Ten Player of the Week adds another
outstanding block.
Ohio answered with just its third made three-pointer of the game, but the Buckeyes’ attack swiftly neutralized it. In
the second quarter, Mikulášiková scored the first eight points. Initially from a deep place, and then injuring the
guests from within the paint.
In the first quarter of the contest, Ohio State was 0 for 7 from beyond the arc. Guard Emma Shumate was the most
damaging player as it shot up to 5-for-8 in the second quarter. The recent high school graduate from Newark, Ohio,
made 4 of 5 field goals, all of them were corner threes. With Shumate scoring a career-high 12 points to outscore the
whole Bobcats team 12-7 in the second quarter, the Buckeyes led 42–13 at the break.
The Buckeyes kept their starters in the game and out of the locker room for the second half. During Ohio’s opening
offensive play, Taylor again blocked a guard named Monica Williams’ spinning layup attempt. With the exception of
a three-pointer by guard Kennedi Watkins of the Bobcats, the Buckeye dominance persisted as they answered with
an 11-point surge.
With less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Taylor was the last player left on the court and was still
going strong. Following a missed layup, Ohio player Taylor took over the ball’s dribbling and rushed behind her to
create an offensive opportunity. That was the Buckeyes’ kind of night.
In order to give the Buckeyes rest before the Nittany Lions visit them on Sunday, none of the starting players played
in the fourth quarter. Three of the starting five scored in double digits on the evening: McMahon finished with 13
points, while Thierry and Mikulášiková each scored 15 points.
Even though the Bobcats briefly reduced their deficit in the fourth quarter, the mid-major was unbeatable. Ohio
