On New Year’s Day, the Alabama Crimson Tide defense is getting ready to take on the attack of the Michigan
Wolverines, who are still unbeaten, in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the Rose Bowl. The Tide don’t appear
to be unduly concerned about Michigan’s air attack, though.
Defensive players have showered Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with praise, in typical Crimson Tide fashion.
Malachi Moore, a defensive back, credited McCarthy for helping Michigan’s offense find its balance. This was

Terrion Arnold, a fellow defensive back who participated on “The Next Round,” concurred, drawing comparisons
between McCarthy and LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, the winner of the Heisman Trophy.
The fact that McCarthy can defeat Alabama with his arm was something that neither Alabama player brought up,
and judging on the previous few games, it’s likely that they are right.
On November 4, McCarthy passed for 335 yards against Purdue. He hasn’t passed for 150 yards in any of the last
four games, and his total of touchdowns and interceptions is just one.
Rather, the running back Blake Corum has been the mainstay of the offense. He scored three touchdowns on the
ground against Purdue and has added two more on the ground in each of the last four games.
