GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: AJ Dillon, a running back, agreed to a one-year contract to rejoin the Green Bay Packers.
Dillon missed the final three games of the season due to a stinger, thus the news of his re-signing didn’t surface until Thursday night,
even though it was still pending a physical.
On Friday, it was formally announced.
Unexpectedly, Aaron Jones was cut loose and is now playing for the Minnesota Vikings, while Dillon went back to the organization
who selected him with the second overall pick in the 2020 draft.
The Packers will then have their tandem for the 2024 season. It’s going to be Thunder and Thunder with Josh Jacobs and Dillon
instead of Lightning and Thunder of Jones and Dillon.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst stated, “You have to have two,” at the Scouting
Despite finishing with a career-worst 3.4-yard average last season due to his inability to make up for Jones’ prolonged absences, Dillon
has been an important role player the previous three seasons.
“Success Rate,” a statistic from Pro Football Reference, serves as the strongest proof. It is equivalent to Green Bay’s win/loss rating
scheme. A run is considered “successful” if it achieves 40% of the yards on first down (a 4-yard run on first-and-10, for example), at
least 60% of the remaining yards on second down, and all of the remaining yards on third or fourth down.
Fifty running backs saw at least 275 carries between 2021 and 2023. With a 55.9% success percentage, Dillon had the highest in the
NFL. Even in 2023, which was a letdown, his 50.
