Nick Saban’s Alabama football squad has not suffered many losses during his tenure in Tuscaloosa. Despite having
only lost 28 games since 2007, the Crimson Tide have won six National Championships, eight SEC crowns, and are
anticipated to lose by people in Vegas who make these kinds of predictions for a livelihood.
Under Nick Saban, Alabama has only been an underdog 13 times, going 7-5 against the spread. Michigan leads the
Tide by two points. (Thanks to The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy).
Well, granted, this statistic alone sounds ridiculous, but consider it this way: In 235 games, Alabama has only been
the underdog 13 times. This implies that Nick Saban has been favored in about 95% of his games at Alabama. Even in
today’s game in the Rose Bowl against the top-ranked, undefeated Michigan Wolverines, Alabama is only a 2-point
dog.
Now, here’s a confusing statistic that will make all of this seem even more absurd: this is only the fifth occasion since
2009 that Alabama has been the underdog, meaning that seven of those times occurred before to Saban’s first
national championship with the Tide.
This is a level of domination in sports at all levels that is extremely uncommon. We are discussing a dynasty
comparable to that of Tom Hanks in the 1990s, the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, the Boston Celtics in the 1960s,
and UConn women’s basketball in the 2000s.
Even if you might not like it or be sick of it, you must at least acknowledge its value.
