The Detroit Lions are enjoying a division title for the first time in thirty years.
The 11-4 Lions are in contention for the conference’s No. 1 seed and have double-digit wins for the first time since
2014. They are tied with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers for the best record in the NFC, but not
everyone believes they will be a serious contender in the postseason.
Among them is former Arizona Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who said he doesn’t believe in
Detroit given its history of mediocrity on the most recent episode of the “Let’s Go” podcast, which he hosts with Tom
Brady and Jim Gray.
Fitzgerald’s fear is justified because Detroit has only made three postseason berths and has had sixteen losing
seasons since 2000; yet, the team has improved significantly in head coach Dan Campbell’s third season.
With quarterback Jared Goff ranking third in the top 10 in passing yards, touchdowns, and passer rating (sixth), and
receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown tied for third in the NFL in receptions, fifth in receiving yards, and seventh in
touchdowns (eight), the Lions rank fifth in scoring offense and third in total offense.
In terms of rushing yards and touchdowns, running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs are both among the
top 12 in the league. Additionally, Detroit’s defense moved up from 32nd to 15th place this year, and its run defense
moved up from
The Lions would win 12 games for the first time since 1991 if they defeated the Minnesota Vikings on December 7 or
the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. In addition to winning the now-defunct NFC Central division, Detroit also achieved
its first postseason victory since the merger in 1970 during that campaign.
