Over the past two seasons, the Green Bay Packers have outperformed expectations in the trade of Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers.
and the upcoming offseason may see the team start to bolster its roster with elite players once again.
On Tuesday, January 16, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report forecast that in the upcoming months, Green Bay will consider both the trade
market and free agency before making a deal for defensive tackle Jonathan Allen of the Washington Commanders.
Allen had publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with the commanders’ performance during a challenging 2023 campaign. He has already
acknowledged that, even though he was raised in Virginia as a team fan, he has considered playing elsewhere and wants to be a
member of a successful club. Although he hasn’t made a formal trade request, if the team decides to do a complete rebuild, it’s possible
He won’t have to.
The Packers, who allowed a pitiful 126.3 running yards per game and totaled an average of 45 sacks in 2023, still have a serious need
in the defensive trenches. Allen, who can play defensive end in Green Bay’s 3-4 front, would be the perfect answer to both problems.
To close a trade, the team would probably have to give up one of its two Round 2 draft picks this year in addition to additional funds.
but Allen’s value to the defense will make giving up these picks well worth it.
Allen was selected for the Pro Bowl two seasons in a row, in 2021 and 2022.
This season, Allen’s output decreased slightly from the 7.5 and 9 sacks he had the two years before. Instead, he totaled 5.5 sacks. Pro
Football Focus nevertheless assessed the defensive tackle as a pass rusher far above average for his position and his contributions to
That area of the defense could help players like Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, the team’s outside linebackers.
Allen has a $72 million, four-year contract that is in its second year. But for the last two seasons of the contract, his base pay is only
$29.5 million. For a Packers club with $8 million in projected salary cap space for 2024, that makes him more cheap.
