HENDERSON, Nevada In addition to making history by appointing Antonio Pierce as the interim coach and Champ
Kelly as the acting general manager, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis also fired general manager Dave Ziegler
and coach Josh McDaniels on Halloween night.
Because of such moves, the Raiders became the first NFL team with Black persons in the coach, general manager,
and president roles, all three of which are directly under the owner. Sandra Douglass Morgan, the team president, is
one of the few female executives in the league.
I take it seriously, Pierce remarked. “Not many people from my background, from Compton, California, where I grew
up, are in front of this stage, carrying this kind of responsibility.”
Pierce remarked that he was a lifelong Raiders supporter and mentioned the team’s tradition of breaking new
ground, regardless of its home base—Las Vegas, Oakland, or Los Angeles. Kelly and Douglass Morgan pointed out
that Mark Davis’ father, Hall of Fame owner Al Davis, established the benchmark in 1989 when Art Shell was named
the NFL’s first Black head coach during the Super Bowl era.
Tom Flores, a Mexican American head coach, led the Raiders to the 1980 title and a second one three years later,
making history as the first minority head coach to win a Super Bowl. Two years ago, he was inducted into the Pro
Football Hall of Fame.
Regarding the most important leadership role on the field, Kelly mentioned that when the Raiders selected Eldridge
Dickey in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft, they became the first team to select a Black quarterback.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Kelly said, “The Raiders have long been a leader in diversity in professional
sports, and the NFL would not be what it is today without Al Davis.” Thus, it should come as no surprise that the
Raiders, led by Mark Davis, are the first team in history to have a Black general manager, president, and head coach.
Being a part of this leadership group makes me incredibly proud.
When Amy Trask was hired by the Raiders in 1997, they became the first team to choose a woman president as well.
Douglass Morgan was
In an interview with The AP, Douglass Morgan stated, “I think there’s additional responsibility (as a woman) any
time you are not what the common person looks like who fills that role.” Therefore, I believe that it is your duty to
ensure that you are not the last. The intention is to not be the last, whether one is a woman of color or just a woman
in general. Although it’s difficult, I have to concentrate on my duties as the Raiders’ greatest president.
Pierce and Kelly’s mandates are comparable.
Pierce needs to come up with a plan to help the Raiders (5-8) snap their three-game losing streak, starting with their
home game against the Chargers on Thursday night. Even in the event that he
Kelly is in a similar situation, attempting to demonstrate that he should take complete responsibility for ensuring
that the team is playoff-worthy.
Those choices will be made shortly enough.
As for now, Davante Adams, a standout wide receiver for Las Vegas, stated that while the existing composition of
those leadership roles should be acknowledged, it also needs to be fixed because it is a narrative.
