Amidst the ongoing issue surrounding Christian Horner, Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff has asked Formula One and its governing body to
“set the compass right”.
This week, Horner’s status as Red Bull team principal was confirmed after an internal investigation into “inappropriate behavior” with
a female coworker.
However, the 50-year-old came under further investigation after a string of intercepted WhatsApp messages—which purported to be
exchanged between him and his accuser—were made public and distributed to all the key participants in the sport.
The unrest is “damaging the sport on a human level,” according to FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem, who made this statement
to the Financial Times on Friday. Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula One, has remained silent on the subject.
Wolff demanded earlier this week that Red Bull GmbH, the parent company of Red Bull Racing, provide more information on the
probe.
The Austrian company stated that it was certain that Horner’s investigation had been “fair, rigorous, and impartial” and that the
report, which is believed to be 150 pages long, is “confidential.” Horner consistently refuted the allegations.
“We’ll see where it goes over the next few days,” Wolff remarked on Saturday evening. “I sincerely hope that the compass is set
correctly by the governing body, the sanctioning body, and the owner of the commercial rights.
However, I’m probably not helping the situation as a whole if I start to question how this has been handled because then it might be
perceived as this
“For this reason, I believe the team is not in control of it. That’s not the whole scope of the issue, and I don’t want to minimize it by
implying that the Mercedes representative is only referring to the Red Bull executives.”
Wolff was saying following his Mercedes team’s dismal performance in the season’s first race, the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line in seventh place, 50 seconds behind winner Max Verstappen, while George Russell began third
and finished fifth, 47 seconds behind the leader.
“Max is in a different league, a different galaxy,” Wolff went on. All we have to do is admit his performance levels.
