The 49ers and Texans have reached a trade agreement that would send defensive tackle Maliek Collins to San Francisco, according to
a report published by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday. The deal’s compensation was not immediately disclosed, and the trade
cannot be finalized until Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, when the new league year officially starts. Later, according to Schefter,
the 49ers will trade Houston a seventh-round pick in exchange for the seasoned defensive tackle.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Collins, 28, in the third round of the 2016 draft. Before settling in with the Texans for the final three
seasons, he played for them for four seasons and Las Vegas for one.
Throughout his career, the 6-2, 310-pound defensive tackle has always been dependable. In his 119 career games as a professional, he
has started 112 of them. He has also recorded 206 tackles, 25.5 sacks, and 46 tackles for loss. His 2016 rookie season record of 5.0
sacks was tied by him this past season.
The agreement probably puts an end to Arik Armstead’s chances of negotiating a contract extension with San Francisco. The 49ers
plan to add Collins as their second defensive lineman addition for the upcoming season. Additionally, a contract with former Browns
DT Jordan Elliott has been agreed to. This season, he and Collins are expected to be important rotational players on the inside of the
49ers’ defensive line.
