It appears that 49ers have been contacted by teams on the availability of a specific wide receiver—one who isn’t Brandon Aiyuk, at
least not yet.
Jason La Canfora of the Baltimore Ravens reports that the 49ers told the Ravens no, at least not right now, when they inquired if they
could trade for Deebo Samuel. An intriguing response.
It’s understandable why the 49ers would prefer not to deal Samuel at this time. If he were traded now, there would be more than $21
million in dead cap and fewer than $7 million in salary cap room. Furthermore, it’s unknown what kind of draft pick the 49ers would
receive in exchange for Samuel and his excessive deal, or even if that pick would be preferable to
However, the 49ers would avoid paying the cap by more than $22 million if they traded Samuel after June 1. Naturally, at that point
they couldn’t trade him for a 2024 draft pick, but they could deal him for a player—possibly at a different position. a player on the
offensive line. a close finish. A defensive back. After all, the 49ers pass more passes than any other team in the league, so do they really
need two ridiculously expensive wide receivers once Brandon Aiyuk’s contract is extended?
Is Brock Purdy more in need of an improved offensive line or an expensive gadget player who isn’t quite a wide receiver or running
back?
It appears that the 49ers ought to consider acquiring Samuel after June 1.
