The main stories in Arizona sports from the previous week were the terrible death of an Arizona Cardinals player in a
vehicle accident, the arrest of a former U of A football player for murder, and the Arizona Coyotes’ progress toward
securing a new, long-term home
1. Jeff Gladney, 25, a cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals: Cornerback Jeff Gladney of the Arizona Cardinals and his
26-year-old girlfriend perished in a two-vehicle collision in downtown Dallas, Texas, on May 30. In March, Gladney
agreed to a two-year deal with the Cardinals. “The Cardinals released a statement saying, ‘We are devastated to learn
about Jeff Gladney’s loss. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss.”
2. Higley High School coach and former Arizona football player are both charged with murder: Before serving as an
assistant coach at Higley High School, Davonte’ Neal was a University of Arizona collegiate football player. In 2017,
he was arrested on suspicion of killing another man. Neal was an assistant coach at Idaho State at the time.
3. Tempe City Council votes to move forward with negotiations for $2.1 billion arena and entertainment district
project on Arizona Coyotes property near Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive: On June 3, the Tempe City Council
voted to move forward with negotiations for the $2.1 billion arena and entertainment district project with the
Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes and the city of Glendale decided not to extend their contract last year, which prevented
the team from hosting home games at Gila River Arena.
4. Texas defeats ASU to win men’s golf national championship: On June 1, Texas defeated Arizona State 3-2, despite
a late comeback by Travis Vick, who two-putted from 30 feet on the 18th hole to defeat Cameron Sisk. This was
Texas’ fourth national championship.
5. Suwinski gets three hits, Pirates blank Diamondbacks 3-0: On Sunday, Jack Suwinski helped the Pittsburgh
Pirates defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 by adding three hits to his game-winning home run the day before.
After sweeping the Dodgers in three games at Los Angeles, Pittsburgh won two of three against Arizona.
