Sergio Perez, a former Lee County deputy, is sentenced to state prison for killing his son…….

Ramon Perez’s mother, who was wearing a T-shirt featuring her son’s image creating a heart with his hands, said she was “feeling

wonderful” about the man who killed her son’s death.

That man, Sergio Perez, a former deputy of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the father of Ramon Perez, who was arrested and

charged on April 22, 2020, received formal punishment on Monday morning. On August 13, 2019, he choked his son to death

following an argument.

When faced with manslaughter accusations in August, 60-year-old Sergio Perez entered a plea of not guilty.

Sergio Perez was fingerprinted, taken into custody, and given a formal sentence of 48 months in prison, two years of probation, and

fines before Lee County Judge J. Frank Porter on Monday.

Ramon Perez’s mother, Yadira Pena, spoke haltingly and with great passion, holding onto a silver pendant shaped like a heart. “He’s

always in my heart, all the time,” she murmured. “My sister Debbie gave me this as a gift, and inside is a photo of my son. I wear and

carry it with me all the time.”

Pena and other family members of Ramon Perez waited silently inside the courthouse where her son’s father was convicted, watching

as Sergio Perez took the sentence and was taken away to be processed for prison.

“Very emotional,” Pena described her feelings following the case’s conclusion outside of the courthouse. “Very emotional, but very

happy at the same time.”

When asked to elaborate, Pena sighed deeply and paused for a while.

She choked up and added, “I’m just feeling very sad because although we have finally reached… I can’t.”

Ramon Perez was described by Pena as “a very lovable son, he was very close to me and my family and I’m just happy we had justice.”

Additionally, Sergio Perez’s sentence forbids him from getting in touch with his ex-wife or her relatives. “No phone calls, no emails, no

texts, no Instagram… no contact means no contact,” Judge Porter underlined.

In August 2019, a death investigation by Cape Coral police focused on a fight between Sergio Perez, who was then off-duty from the

Sheriff’s Office, and his son.

A disturbance report prompted police to respond around 2:30 p.m. to a residence in the 600 block of SE 23rd Street.
