The Boston Red Sox have been active in the offseason, making significant moves to strengthen their roster. On December 3, 2024, they agreed to terms with left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman on a one-year, $10.75 million contract. Chapman, 36, brings a wealth of experience, including a 2.63 ERA and 335 career saves over 15 seasons with teams like the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. In the 2024 season with the Pirates, he recorded a 3.79 ERA, 14 saves, and 98 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.

Prior to finalizing Chapman’s signing, the Red Sox made a “serious push” to acquire two-time All-Star and 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber. Bieber, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2024, limiting him to just two starts that season. Despite the injury setback, the Red Sox were aggressive in their pursuit. However, Bieber chose to re-sign with the Cleveland Guardians on a one-year, $10 million deal, with a $16 million player option for 2026.
These strategic moves reflect the Red Sox’s commitment to enhancing their pitching staff. Chapman’s addition aims to bolster the bullpen, providing a veteran presence and a potential closer role. Although they missed out on Bieber, the team’s proactive approach in the offseason indicates a focus on strengthening their pitching depth for the upcoming season.
